After sleep and rest for your body's digestion overnight, it is important start your daily Ayurvedic rituals to set your body and mind on the right path for the day. This starts with your dinacharya, including waking and scraping the tongue, gargling with herbal oil, drinking warm lemon water, breathwork, movement, and warm oil self-massage. Once you are cleansed and fresh for the day, a healthy, warm, and light breakfast sets your digestion on the right track for optimal absorption of healing elements and elimination of toxins. These recipes are easy to digest and include healing spices to reduce inflammation, stoke your metabolism, and nourish the body.
These are some of our favorite recipes!
SEARED STEWED APPLES
2 apples, peeled and cut into pieces
2 Tbsp raisins
1 Tbsp ghee
1/4 tsp turmeric
pinch clove powder
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cardamom
1/2 tsp cinnamon
In a medium pan, warm and melt ghee
Add apple pieces and lightly sear and carmelize
Add enough water to cover bottom of pan
Sprinkle in all spices and stir to coat apples
Add raisins
Cover and simmer 5-7 minutes until apples are soft
Enjoy with another little sprinkle of cinnamon
GOLDEN OATS
1 c. steel cut oats
water (according to directions)
handful dried fruit (raisins, prunes, apricots, etc)
3 cardamom ppds (hit with side of knife to pop open)
1/4 tsp powdered ginger
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp turmeric
Add steel cut oats to heated water
Add all spices and fruit
Cook according to directions
Enjoy with a pat of ghee, drizzle maple syrup or honey, sprinkle with cinnamon or cardamom powder, and top with nuts
CRISPY PANCAKES
2/3 c. moong beans (lentils)
1/3 c. basmati rice
1/4 tsp. cardamom
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
pinch baking soda
water
coconut oil
Night before: Rinse the lentils and rice until water runs clear (2-3 times); Soak in water overnight
Drain water from grains
Add grains to blender, and fill with water to cover grains
Add spices and baking soda
Blend, adding water to desired batter consistency
Add coconut oil to med/high frying pan
Ladle batter to form pancakes
Fry on each side until batter gets crispy and cooked
Serve with honey or maple syrup, stewed fruit, sprinkle of spices
